DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL

Lutheran Church Special School is a public mixed day and boarding school which caters for learners who are mentally challenged and have moderate and severe learning difficulties. According to the school development plan for the year 2014, the following had been indentified as the school development needs in order of priorities.

School Perimeter wall fencing:

This is needed to provide security to the school as a whole since some children escape through the opening along the fence. The school has had a number of cases of students disappearing from school. Therefore, construction of a perimeter wall as a fence would provide a lasting solution to any security risk in the school.

School Minibus:

The school requires a minibus from time to time to support 24 to 7 transport needs for health care services for these children to be  taken to the hospital whenever they fell sick. In addition the bus can also be used for educational visits to various places.

Construction of two more classrooms:

Since the inception of free primary education in Kenya in the year 2003, many children have been able to access school and this has made the number of children in the school to go up since some students are taking their classes within the dormitory due to lack of enough classrooms in the school. It is estimated that two more classrooms can help to alleviate the problem.

Adapted swimming pool:

The school needs an adapted swimming pool which can help to cater for the needs of the learners with mental challenges as  they can benefit from hydrotherapy  services. and also for recreational purposes.

Purchase of land:

The land in which the school is currently situated has limited space for expansion for additional structures to accommodate new students that the school admits every term. In addition Lutheran church special is the only school in Kisumu city that deals with children with mental challenges. This makes the demand for school very high leading to high number of children that would require classrooms and introduction of more vocational programs in the school.

OTHER AREAS OF CONCERN:

In the school there are many students who suffer epileptic conditions and other minor ailments. These conditions require the students to be on drugs throughout their life time, this is really  a great challenge for the school in terms of providing medication and dressing materials. Since most parents can not afford to buy these epileptic drugs due to high cost. The dressing materials for their children are also very expensive. If they fail to buy drugs for the epileptic children the conditions worsen off as each seizure damages the brain. Which generally affect their education.

Vulnerable and Orphaned children:

There are a total of 50 students who are vulnerable, total orphans, single parent or both parents but they live in poverty and can not support the school requirements. These students have to depend on the school for their upkeep and in some cases wellwishes bring something small to the school to support their needs. These children who are vulnerable are really in need of support in any way possible so that they can learn effectively.
